JOHN D. ROSEBOOM
Director

John Roseboom is the Director of Bands at Sarasota High School where he oversees the Mighty Sailor Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Sailor Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and "The Admirals" Jazz Orchestra. The Mighty Sailor Band is the only band program in America granted permission by the Secretary of the Navy to wear official US Navy uniforms. In that vein, the band strives to demonstrate a high level of musicianship, discipline,and has its own unique sense of patriotism and family. Under his direction the groups have performed in Atlanta, Washington DC, Walt Disney World Resort, and will be performing in Chicago. The Mighty Sailor Band has worked with and performed along side the US Naval Academy Band, The Parris Island Marine Band, The US Army Field Band, and the University of Tampa Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. His bands have been awarded superior rating and "The Admirals" perform frequently at State Jazz Festival and other jazz events throughout Florida.

Before his appointment to Sarasota High, Mr. Roseboom served as director of bands at both Belleview High School and Belleview Middle School where the bands consistently received high ratings and performed quality music.

Mr. Roseboom also has the privilege of directing one of the few remaining live circus bands at the PAL Sailor Circus of Sarasota. In this capacity Mr. Roseboom serves as the musical adviser to the the Sailor Circus creative staff.

In the Summer, Mr. Roseboom is on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI. There he serves as both a member of the brass faculty and the conductor of the Camp Bernstein Band.

Mr. Roseboom received his Bachelor of Music Education at Stetson University and his Masters of Music Education at Florida State University. Mr. Roseboom holds memberships in Music Educators National Convention, Florida Music Educators Association, Florida Bandmasters Association,Florida Orchestra Association, and Windjammers.

BRYCE EVANS
Guard Instructor

Bryce Evans is proud to return to the Mighty Sailor Band as its Guard Instructor. A former 3-year member of the guard, she served as captain for the 2007-2008 school year, earning Most Outstanding Guard Member. She choreographed the guard work for the 2007-2008 “Pirates” field show and also that year’s winter guard show entitled “The Music Box”. While at Sarasota High, she was voted Homecoming and Prom Queen, along with Most Artistic Girl.

Bryce studied dance with the Sarasota Ballet of Florida for over ten years and volunteered as a student teacher for Dance- the Next Generation, the Sarasota Ballet’s scholarship program for underprivileged children. Bryce is currently pursuing a degree in Art History from the University of South Florida with a dance scholarship from the Sarasota Ballet of Florida’s Dance- the Next Generation program. She works at a children’s toy store and does freelance work as a store window muralist with her fiancé, also a former captain of the Mighty Sailor Band Color Guard.

Andy Harshman
Percussion Instructor

Andy Harshman is the Percussion Instructor for the Mighty Sailor Band. He is also a Chemistry, Physical Science, and Earth Science teacher and is the co-director of the MaST Research Institute at Sarasota High. Mr. Harshman is a former 4-year member of the Sailor Band drumline, and served as Band Captain for the 1999-2000 school year. Mr. Harshman is also a former member of the Herd of Thunder marching band at the University of South Florida, serving in the drumline there for 2 years.

Mr. Harshman graduated from Sarasota High as a MaST Research Scholar in 2000. He graduated from the University of South Florida with Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in Chemical Engineering in 2007.

Mr. Harshman is extremely proud of all the percussion members of the band, as their performance shows what rewards hard work and dedication can bring. He is extremely excited about being able to work in a field that affords him the opportunity to devote time to both science and music education.

MELISSA DWECK
Guard Instructor

Ms. Dweck has worked as a lumberjack, laundress, nurse, cook, intelligence gatherer, refugee organizer, raid leader, network engineer, podiatrist, geisha, muleskinner, Madonna tribute artist and fundraiser. She was the first American woman to plan and lead an intergalactic mission bringing music and drama to humanoids across the quadrant. She prides herself in never losing a passenger on the underground railroad, and never being captured or catching the measles.
